Minister of health in Honduras Arturo Bendana

Honduran Health Minister Arturo Bendana takes part in a fumigation against the dengue mosquito, in Tegucigalpa June 25, 2010. At least 12 people have died in Honduras due to dengue fever so far.

Arturo Bendana, Honduras' Minister of Health, began his morning by visiting and inspecting hospitals. Dr. Bendana is dedicated to ensuring assistance to the sick despite the Easter holiday.

Bendana announced that the budget for the health network this year is 10 billion Lempiras. Seven hundred million Lempiras will be going to the purchase of medicines to alleviate the acute shortage of medicines in hospitals and health centers throughout the country. The doctor said international cooperation for health programs and projects from Europe, the U.S., and Asia are beginning again which is good news for Honduras.

Friday night Dr. Bendana made a surprise visit to the hospital Mario Rivas in San Pedro Sula to check into the quality of patient care. According to Bendana, hospital service is good within the limitations they have. The biggest problem is the need for physical space because the corridors of Mario Rivas are packed with patients still awaiting a bed. One patient told the Minister that he had personally been waiting seven days for a room.

Arturo Bendana plans to conduct a thorough assessment of the regional hospitals that are not meeting the public's needs and then correct the problems. This, he believes, will help in the operational status of the hospital Mario Rivas, which was designed solely as a specialty hospital. It is not advisable, the doctor said, that a person with a minor surgical need comes in to San Pedro when they can be treated perfectly well at the regional hospitals.

There are public hospitals in Trujillo , Tocoa, La Ceiba , Tela, El Progreso, Puerto Cortes, Santa Rosa de Copan, Santa Barbara and Comayagua and yet people arrive daily in San Pedro to be treated.

Bendana was pleased by the spirit of service that employees have in all of the health care centers he has visited. He said the surprise visits will continue during his four years of government, and that he would make every effort to improve health care across the network.
